Rohacell 5 Axis CNC Machining

Rohacell is a rigid Polymethacrylimide (PMI)-based structural foam that can be easily shaped using 5 Axis CNC Machining to produce three dimensional objects designed using CAD.

Rohacell is generally used as a space/weight saving material taking up volume where weight reduction is paramount, predominantly in the Motorsport, Aerospace and Medical industries. Rohacell SL is a commonly used material in Motorsport, but other materials such as Rohacell EC and HF have electromagnetic shielding and high frequency transparency characteristics, lending itself to be used in the light-weight construction of radomes, for instance. Please see here a full list of available Rohacell Foams.

When ‘sandwiched’ or over-laid with Carbon Fibre Composite a very strong, light weight component is generated. Sandwich construction provides extremely robust and durable composite materials compatible with all common thermoset and thermoplastic polymers. The high heat distortion temperature of the foam and its exceptional creep compression strength allow good consolidation of the fibre-polymer composite face sheets during processing, as well as very short production cycle times. The high-performance foam can be processed at temperatures up to 235°C and pressures up to 0.7 MPa over several hours.

Concept Tooling can 5 Axis CNC Machine simple or very complicated Rohacell foam components and inserts and ‘Sandwiched’ components, using the latest Carbon fibre cutting technology, direct from your CAD model.

The benefits of using 5 Axis Machining are one set-up operations for complicated shapes, multiple machining operations running in tandem and less holding jig requirements. All this helps Concept be one of the most cost effective suppliers of CNC Machined Rohacell components in the UK.
